There’s nothing more heart-wrenching than seeing your beloved collection of gold necklaces tangled together in your jewellery box. If you are in a rush or have a particularly precious necklace wrapped up in knots, the feeling of dread is inevitable. However, you can’t simply tug at them forcefully until they loosen, as it will damage your jewellery. In this article, we will go through several tips to untangle your necklaces, along with exploring several suggestions on how you can prevent this situation from happening.
What are the different ways to untangle your gold necklaces?
Soak it in warm, soapy water
Fill a bowl with warm water that is mixed with a small amount of dish soap, unscented shampoo, or hair conditioner. Then soak the necklace in the mixture, and gently use your finger to rub against the knots which will slowly loosen. The final step is to carefully pull them apart, but remember to not use excessive force as you may risk damaging the necklaces. After they have all come undone, have them thoroughly rinsed and dried. You should also avoid using any harsh chemicals in the mixture as they will damage your jewellery.
Coat it in baby powder
Lay your necklaces on a flat surface and coat them thoroughly in baby powder. Then, slowly rub your fingers against the knots, which will loosen them. Baby powder will act as a lubricant to help them come undone with minimal pulling or tugging involved. Once your necklace has been untangled, ensure it is washed thoroughly as the powder can become abrasive over time.
Use some baby oil
Place a few drops of baby oil on your fingers and massage them onto the tangled parts of your necklace. This works similarly to baby powder, as it works to loosen the knots, even for particularly stubborn ones. As with the other methods listed above, be sure to gently separate them from each other, and avoid pulling or tugging to prevent damage.
Take them to a jeweller
If you feel as if the knots are too severe, you can take it to a jeweller as they have special tools along with knowledge to untangle them without damage.
How can you prevent your gold necklaces from tangling?
Store them in a jewellery box or pouch
We do not recommend placing all of your necklaces in a single box, but rather store them in separate ones to prevent tangling. If you do not wish to be overcrowded by jewellery boxes, you can get one with multiple compartments so you can store your collection in a single place.
Thread them through a straw
If you do not have a jewellery box or pouch on hand, a plastic straw can work as a temporary measure. Simply unclasp your necklace, thread the ends through the straw and clasp them again. The straw will prevent your jewellery from moving around and creating knots.
Use a necklace hanger stand
It works similarly to a clothes hanger, and all you need to do is simply hang your necklace on the stand. If you want to have all of your necklaces displayed in the open, and have the convenience of being able to see them all at once, then this is the solution for you. However, you will need to have an allocated space for them as it is usually limited to one necklace per stand.
Place them in the box they originally came in
The box which our jewellery originally came in is ideal for storing them. They are usually lined with soft material on the interior with loops or slits to thread your necklaces through and prevent them from tangling. You can also use them in place of hanger stands to have your jewellery on display.
